Affton is a small, primarily residential community of St. Louis on the city’s south side. Afton’s history goes back to the 1820s when Kenneth McKenzie, a Scotchman who had immigrated to America and made a fortune in the fur trade, decided to settle down as a farmer and bought around 3,000 acres of land from one of the early settlers, Gregoire Sarpy. Sarpy’s land was spread across almost 6,000 acres and was positioned just southwest of St. Louis. McKenzie purchased a tract of the eastern half of Sarpy’s lands and set up a great plantation. McKenzie’s territory included all the land between what is today Gravois Road to the south, Hazel Avenue to the north, River des Peres to the east, and Laclede Station Road to the west. This is much of what Affton is at present.
