The primarily residential community of Affton is located on the south side of St. Louis. You can trace Afton’s history to the 1820s when Kenneth McKenzie, a Scotchman, purchased around 3,000 acres of land from Gregoire Sarpy, one of the early settlers in the region. This purchase was made in line with McKenzie’s wish to settle down in the area as a farmer. Sarpy’s land measured almost 6,000 acres and was situated just southwest of St. Louis. After buying a tract of Sarpy’s lands’ eastern half, McKenzie established a big plantation. McKenzie’s terrain included all the land between what is today Laclede Station Road to the west, River des Peres to the east, Hazel Avenue to the north, and Gravois Road to the south. This is much of what you see in present-day Affton.
